[NU Sports] First game

forgot to include first pro games.

There weren't any pro sports teams in Omaha when I was growing up, just cows. So I my first opportunity to see a pro game was when I moved to Chicago to go to NU.

In 1968 the cubs were good, so it was tough to get tickets. My younger brother and I went to White Sox games instead. It was heaven and so began a lifelong obsession.

After the cubs got bad and old again in 1974, my girl friend was tired of Comisky wanted to see a game at Wrigley. It was mid summer. The Cubs had already packed it in. So I went to gloat. It was a great day. The Cubs got pasted and we met a bunch of the original bleacher bums. They were eager enough chat up a cute college girl that they were willing to forgive me for being in enemy territory.

My first bears game was in Soldier Field in 1980 against Washington. Walter Payton had a good game and the Bears hung on for the win. He was beauty in motion.

My first bulls game was MJ's rookie season against Detroit. The game was in December at the old Chicago Stadium. The Bulls were bad the previous season so there were lots of tickets. Jordan didn't have much of an outside shot. Everything was to the basket. It was spectacular. Even though the Bulls lost, you could see that the world was never going to be the same. You could also see that Isaih Thomas couldn't guard him and was very unhappy about it. That led to several years of one of the most bitter rivalries in sports.

You gotta love Chicago.

Jeff

Saw my first NU game in 1968 as a freshman. We lost to Purdue in a blow out. We won the next home game, though against Wisconsin. Even then, we had their number.

These were the Alex Agase years with Mike Adamle and Jerry Bown.

One of my Elder hall dorm mates, Jack Derning, was on the team. The team finished second in the BT my senior year (71) and beat Ohio State. Steve Craig was on that team.

That was the last winning season that the team would have for 24 years. Agase left after the 72 season and replaced by John Pont. Then there was a long string of good coaches who failed until GB came along.

I didn't go to NU until med school and had been to various college and pro
games in life prior to that, but the first NU game I attended was against
Iowa in 1981, when the Cats lost 64-0 and Hayden Fry kept running up the
score (now, he was a class act). One of five games the Cats were shut out
that year.

I never saw the Cats win in person until 1999, and only once since then (I
usually only can get to the bowls and games played in the West). Some of my
friends think I am pretty crazy to go to games where my team almost always
loses.

And yet, to think I am one of the more pollyana-ish people on this list....
