Saw my first NU game in 1968 as a freshman. We lost to Purdue in a blow out. We won the next home game, though against Wisconsin. Even then, we had their number.
These were the Alex Agase years with Mike Adamle and Jerry Bown.
One of my Elder hall dorm mates, Jack Derning, was on the team. The team finished second in the BT my senior year (71) and beat Ohio State. Steve Craig was on that team.
That was the last winning season that the team would have for 24 years. Agase left after the 72 season and replaced by John Pont. Then there was a long string of good coaches who failed until GB came along.

Subject: Re: [NU Sports] First game
I didn't go to NU until med school and had been to various college and pro
games in life prior to that, but the first NU game I attended was against
Iowa in 1981, when the Cats lost 64-0 and Hayden Fry kept running up the
score (now, he was a class act). One of five games the Cats were shut out
that year.
I never saw the Cats win in person until 1999, and only once since then (I
usually only can get to the bowls and games played in the West). Some of my
friends think I am pretty crazy to go to games where my team almost always
loses.
And yet, to think I am one of the more pollyana-ish people on this list....
