I don't recall it perfectly, but wasn't the Johhny Majors-Philip Fullmer succession something less than seamless at Tennessee ?  I remember heart surgery for Majors (shoulda-been Heisman winner at Tennessee), an interim gig for Fullmer, and some booster/athletic department connections working to Fullmer's advantage ?
