[NU Sports] a minority position

Well, in terms of getting press (this is LA, after all) and forgetting about whatshisname in the pewter and neon green sweater on the sidelines, job well done by SC.

I think Kiffin has potential to be OK in the long run, but he's going to have to tough out a couple rough years -- and not just with the NCAA investigators. The rest of the Pac 10 sees the blood in the water and they aren't afraid of the big bully anymore. Oregon, Washington, OSU, Zona, Stanford and even UCLA and Cal (Tedford couldn't beat SC to save his life after that one year, but he was pretty good otherwise) know that it's now or never to make this a competitive league again.

But that's all Kiffin is right now - potential and tough-talking tweets (and yes, I cringe every time I hear that last word, too). It's easy to see why he wants the SC job, even if it is a sleazeball way to get it (but hey, it doesn't even crack the top five of SEC coaching jerkmoves this year) and if he weathers the storm it could work out very well for him.

It's just hard to imagine a place like SC couldn't get better. I mean, Kevin O'Neill came into Troytown with more credibility, and that was for their offseason hobby program, not the big kahuna of SC football.

Crazy couple of months for coaches, though. I guess what we've learned is that you can't *ick with the players physically, but you can *ick around with their future and college experience by playing fast and loose with your job commitment while they're locked in once they sign.

Thankfully, this is an area where the Big Ten does appear to be behind the rest of the nation ... aside from a couple cases, our only coaching turnovers in the last decade have been retirements with groomed successors or -- sadly -- tragic losses where class acts held things together through the tough times.

GO CATS!!!
