Roy,
You said something in an earlier post that I was saying throughout the
Outback (and afterwards). I think it is putting too much on Demos to have him
handle (a) punting, (b) PK'ing and (c) Kickoffs. He is not that big a
guy, and there are very few "two-way" kickers around--for a good reason, it
doesn't usually work well. I was sitting a few rows behind the NU players,
and I got to see and hear Demos' agony head-on, including one "F---" roar.
Unfortunately, the Demos at the beginning of the season (who resembled
Valenzisi) was just not there at the end, when it was most needed. But he
didn't lose this game; the team did. They came close, but fell short. A
better running game and pash rush would have obviated the need for Demos to kick
from as far as he had to.
Also, I think MacCall and Fitz may have beentoo conservative when we
recovered the fumble in the last minute or so. We didn't really attack as much
as I thought we might have--i.e., to make the last-second kick in
Regulation a 25- or 30-yarder, rather than 44 yards. Demos kicked the snot out of
the ball; the sound when his boot hit the ball resonated throughout the
stadium. However, I think he may have hit it too hard, because he had a long
distance to send it, with swirling winds. Had we not settled for the
3rd-down run up the gut, fate might have well smiled on us.
