CONFERENCE SWITCH? I don't think anything is going to happen right away
in the conference breakups and shakeups, but I have been told that Texas
Athletic Directot DeLoss Dodds has an interest at some point in aligning
the Big 12 and the Pack 10 and maybe adding a couple of teams.
If he didn't come up with the idea, he should have. When you put Texas
and California in the same league, you have by far the two largest
states in the union and lots and lots of TV sets.
The plan would be for the Northern teams to play the Northern teams and
the Southern teams to play the Southern teams. As it stands now, it
would be a 12-team south and a 10-team north, but a couple of schools,
like Brigham Young or Boise State could be added to make it 12 and 12.
The good and bad thing about such a move is that it would leave room for
only one non-confereence game. That's good because Texas has to buy
games with lots of money for lesser schools to come to Austin and get
slaughtered. But it's bad because coaches would like to have more than
one warmup game before getring into conference play.
The reason athletic officials would like it is that no one gets left
behind and it would lead to a much more lucrative TV contract.
