Also interesting to note that if we add Texas, we drop from 2nd to 3rd in endowmwment

Right now, Michigan has 5.65 Billion, we have 5.14 Billion (based on 2007 numbers, http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/22/pf/college/richest_endowment_funds/index.htm )

Texas has (yikes) 13.23 Billion

Minnesota would be a surprising 4th at 2.22 Billion

In fact, the Big Ten (11) has 10 Billion Dollar + endowments

Only Iowa appears to be below that magic cut-off number

Based on CNN/Money website, 62 in the Billion dollar club - the Big Ten would have 11 of those 62.

Big Ten 11
Ivy League 8
ACC 5
PAC 10 4
Big East 4
Big 12 3
C-USA 3
SEC 1
others 23

Like I said, we'll have to see -- but this one just seems crazy enough to work
he more I hear it. Texas is a pretty natural fit in every way but location ---
nd the Big Ten probably LOVES the location part because it ...
1) Brings in 2 megamarkets, some other big ones and even more nationwide
) It opens more doors to Texas High School recruiting
) For spring sports like baseball, as Roy mentions, it would raise our game
onsiderably -- play down in Texas early and up north late. Probably wouldn't
elp NU much, but some programs are close to hitting the big time in baseball
OSU especially) and it might give them more of a boost recruiting and in games
own south.
And on Texas side, you have the academics, the money and the league prestige in
ootball and other sports.
It just might bring enough money to work with the minor sports and end up being
ood for all ... like I wrote with the distances, the Pac 10 isn't any closer
ravel wise and the Big Ten would have a far better shot at making the distances
ork than the ACC or Big East.
> an academic question. Other than the Ivy League, all
are admitting that the Big Ten represents the highest order
of academics, and the other leagues aren't even close.
And there you go - if it is an academic decision, then Texas will run, not walk,
o the Big Ten. Other leagues have similar strength at the top (Duke, Vandy,
al/Stanford) ... but no one comes close in depth. The "states" (OSU/MSU/PSU ...
specially OSU) would be mid-level or better in other leagues -- and
ichigan/Wisconsin/Illinois/Minnesota would be top-level ... then the Big Ten
rings out NU and UC and it's over.
It's interesting that this rumor has been out in the sports media for awhile now
nd while fans and talk radio have a lot to say, the Big Ten and Texas are
retty silent. You can bet the folks in South Bend have noticed that as well.
GO CATS!!!
