And I can tell you that at least from the Big East perspective travel costs
remain a major concern of the athletic directors every year. It's not a
football or basketball issue - those sports more than pay their own way and
those games could be played in China for all the difference travel costs
make. It's the Olympic sports that it comes into play and the more
geographically dispersed the conference the bigger the problem. With the
flood of BTN money, maybe it doesn't much matter to a Big Ten school were
the 12th school is located but I'm not so sure that's true. When push comes
to shove, that 12 or 14th school is going to have to add sufficient marginal
income that it will more than cover the additional travel costs of the
Olympic sports faced by that school's addition. This decision will not come
down to a football decision - football will be a factor but it will only be
one of a number of factors and will not even be the major factor.
