[NU Sports] Texas In The Big 10?

IMHO:
Jo Pa was invited or at least his interest in the Big 10 was rewarded because a lot of
people were afraid that in the 70's NU was going to drop football (like Chicago) and leave
the Big 10 with only 9 teams.
I know there are folks on this list who were closer to the athletic decisions that I was
or am now, But there was a undercurrent of anti-sports when I was on campus (early 70's)
and I'm sure others in the Big 10 noticed
Funny, because when I was there, the AD raised $100,000 in a few days to put down Tartan
Turf at Dyche Stadium and it was done faster than you can say Go Cats. (as reported in the
Daily that winter)
Then they put the star basketball center on academic probation because he tried to take
organic chemistry at NU summer school and bombed the course which screwed his GPA. That
was the loudest shout of indignation from the students about sports I saw in my time in
Evanston.
Penn State was a mistake, even with the TV money - it makes splitting into two divisions
nearly impossible - and I wouldn't be surprised to see them bolt to other Big East some
day.
Now, Texas is firmly ingrained in a conference with Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,
SMU, Texas Tech, et. Al. They would be better served to put TCU and North Texas into the
group and make a Southwest Conference again, maybe let Arkansas back in.
That 3 state grouping has 2 major markets (Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston) and two teams
that fight for the national championship from time to time. Why would they want to travel
half the fall to places like Champaign and Bloomington so they could get in their games. I
would think the folks down in the Lone Star State could put together 12 Div 1 teams
without going north of Stillwater.
IMHO

Texas? As Steven said about the Iowa game..blek, or something like that. Why don't we
raid Florida from the SEC? Or UCLA from the PAC10? Makes as much sense.
I tell everyone who will listen (whether anyone does is another question) that Joe Pa
made a mistake joining the Big 10. If he wasn't so greedy, he would have gone to the Big
East, and I doubt Miami, Va. Tech and BC would've taken a walk. As a Pennsylvanian, I
miss Penn St.'s games against Pitt, Syracuse, and West Virgina. They were a big fish in a
little pond, and it served them well. Now, they're just a fish.
Get Notre Dame. Play them in Evanston. Beat them on a regular basis. GO CATS!!!

'm in too good a mood to hate anything at this point. Who dat?! :)
That said ...
> I'm not sure how I feel. Why would Texas want to leave the
Big 12 for the Big 10+2? I don't pay much attention,
but the Big 12 seems to be on solid ground.
Mmmm, not quite. The Big XII is probably the most poachable conference of the
ig Six (only because no one wants the Big East and they're set as a mega
asketball league).
The Pac 10 is making serious overtures to Colorado to come aboard with Utah, BYU
nd Boise State. The Big Ten has been talking to Mizzou for sure, and maybe KU
r Nebraska ... and the league has been split for awhile as the Texas schools
gainst the rest - with the northern schools especially feeling like they get
he short end of the stick.
So if any of the "cartel" as Wilbon calls it will crack, it will be the Big XII
plus, then we could take the name! :) ).
As for Texas themselves, they do make a nice fit academically and athletically
.. but LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! In this age of travel costs, sending a
eam to Austin on a road trip would be a killer.
If the league did it, they'd have to do it Pac 10 style and have a "two-fer" so
he trip is at least worth it economically.
Maybe they are looking into my idea of the "Big Ten x 2" and want to take in
exas, TCU, ATM or some others for a southern division?:)
But overall, like you said, this looks more like jockeying games to try and get
he Irish to budge. Nothing to get seriously worked up over.
GO CATS!!!
