There was a book published about then Presiden Nixon visiting texas for the Texas Arkansas game of 1969. They were #1 and #2 at the time. Texas won 15-14 (after being down 14-0).  Nixon declared texas #1 much to the chagrin of fans of undefeated penn state. The book argues that nixon visited texas knowing the southern and I believe all white texas football team would be a place where he would get a warm reception rather than a lot of viet nam war protesters which were blanketing a good chunk of the country at the time

As I wait in Florida to go to a funeral in Chicago let me explain how  
iconoclastic Texas is and how joining a Yankee conference would cause a revolt.  
Sure part of the big 12 is north but it ain't Ohio.
