[NU Sports] Texas In The Big 10?

Texas would leave the Big XII for the same reason most other schools would-- cash. The Big XII TV contract pales in comparison to the deals the Big 10 and SEC have. Consider these figures (source: http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2009/dec/20/frustration-and-temptation/):

Texas football revenue: $12 million. Illinois football revenue: $21 million. So, a "meh" football school like Illinois pulls revenues approaching double what a marquee program like Texas pulls? Of course Texas would want a piece of that. Certainly the other Big 10 schools would benefit from having Texas bring its TV markets to the Big 10 network, too.

Another reason Texas would want to join: membership in the CIC that the Big 10 offers. That's an appealing deal for a large academic institution like Texas.

You might find this link interesting. I read this fairly thoughtful blog post from an Illini blogger a couple of months ago on the subject of Big 10 expansion:

Personally, I wouldn't mind it if it happened. I love both NU (WCAS 1993) and UT (Law 1996), and grew up going to UT games with my Dad. I'd love to see the Cats play here in Austin from time to time. I'd just have to wear half purple, half orange to the games, I suppose. Maybe a visit to the Clemson bookstore is in order. :)
