Chuck is absolutely right. No offense meant to the teams of 40+ years ago. This year's team does have to do more to reach those accomplishments. I regret my haste to anoint this team. I do hope, however, this team finishes strong and does surpass all but the Lonborg teams of nearly 80 years ago.

We have to be careful about this 'Best Season Ever' label. It may be the most victories in a season, but there have been a good number of very good seasons (first division of the Big Ten), it's just that as recently as the late 60's, we only played about 24 games a year (14 in conference, 10 non-conference).
Larry Glass had 4 very good seasons 65-69 (1 4th and 3 5th's, 28-28 conference, 22-15 non-conf) before he resigned.
Don't forget that Dutch Lonborg won two league titles (31 11-1 and 33 10-2) as well as a Helms National Championship (16-1, 11-1) in 1931, back when we played 12 conference games a year and usually 6 or 7 non-conference games.
In 23 seasons, Lonborg was 138-141 in conference, with 2 Big Ten titles and 12 finishes in the top half of the league. He was 98-62 in non-conference games, and he also won the mythical National Championship in 1931.
This years team will probably play 33 games, 18 in the league and 15 non-conference. Most of Lonborg's teams played 19 games, 12 in the league and 7 non-conference. So while this years team may finish 22-9, 10-8, it probably isn't the best team ever - that is like saying the 2007 UCLA team was better than the Gail Goodrich 65 champions because '07 went 30-6 while 65 went 28-2. We look likely to finish around 7th in the league ? That's not 'Best Season Ever' material

Sadly, the bar isn't too high on the last part of that...if the Cats beat hicago State and go .500 in the remaining conference games and win a game or a ouple of games in the NIT, it'll go down as the team's best season ever. If he Cats only beat Chicago State and lose every other remaining game, it'll be ne of the team's best seasons ever (I am not suggesting that's what will appen).
And any of the above is probably a lot better than anybody would have expected hen Coble went down for the season.
Despite the tough loss yesterday, there could be plenty of excitement ahead.
here is a glimmer of hope for the NCAAs and plenty of hope to continue a emorable season.

There was an article in the Trib yesterday that painted a very grim picture of he Wildcat's chances (and apparently the 'Cats were aware of that story, lthough it didn't seem to help). If that picture was accurate, I would think he big dance chances are very, very slim at this point.
The big problem is that those early non-conference wins just aren't holding up s well as we would like, as some of our "big" non-con opponents are not faring ell.
Winning out including a win over Wisconsin might do it, but that seems pretty nlikely. This is a good team, but not a great team.
Fortunately, there's always the possibility of winning the Big Ten tournament.
ot likely, but not out of the question, particularly if we get some help from nother mid-pack team knocking off one of the top dogs, making our path easier.
Still, an awful lot to play for this year--could still go down as one of the est NU seasons ever.
Tom
