Flying stopped being 'fun' long before 9/11, but has gotten a lot worse in the past
few years.
When we went to Europe in 2006 (Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy and Germany), I
wound up on 12 different flights over three weeks. I probably would skip several of
those destinations if I planned a trip to Europe today. (I still want to spend some
time in France, but my wife isn't as interested in it as I am, so it's on the back
burner for now, unless maybe I can interest her in another week in Ireland.)
The airlines, especially in the USA, make you feel like cattle, though I think
that comparison might be unfair to the beef industry.
I no longer fly if I have any other feasible options. When we went to Maine for
a vacation last summer, we drove, 3000 miles each way, but along the way we got to
spend some time with our son and his family, especially our 3 year old granddaughter
(twice), spend an evening with my best friend from Northwestern days, and visit with
my wife's sister.
Any business trip less than about 1100 miles (such as visiting a client in central
Tennessee), I drive. I may have to go to a meeting Florida next summer, I may drive
and spend some time in Tennessee, and hopefully even visit a friend in Charlotte.
