I didn't see the game but assume any team outside of the best can have a bad game. However I think the concern has to be that like football,we play a pretty patsy non conference schedule that may be a confidence builder and good for our overall record by optics, but does little to really prepare us for the big time conference schedule. I know everyone seems to do it ,but somehow it seems to hurt us by disguising our true colors and having us ill prepared for the January-February grind, particularly on the road

Putting the game into perspective - 12 hours later:
NU was in the classic "set up" - playing in a tourney on someone's home court against that someone, St. Johns.
You can accept it or not, but the Garden is St. John's house, and the St. Johns seniors, who are also used to being ripped by their local media, we itching to stick it to a team from a big conference. It might be the high point of their season.
They also have a new coach who obviously shook up the Red Storm, AND he enlisted the help of Keady (bad hair and all) to run Quality Control on his team. Keady never had any trouble beating NU when Perdoo was loaded with big inside guys. That's what St. John's brought to the court last night.
The telling stat was during the MVP awards, Shurna and Crawford were on the All Tourney team from NU. Thompson wasn't.
One other thing - on Luka:
He's being asked to really step up this year. Every interview with BC that I've heard, either pregame or post, Carmody is asking Luka to get more "production." Monday night, Luka hits double figures, the Cats win going away. Last night - well look at the box score. Our big guys got handled in the paint. We can't do that in Big 10 play.
Still think the glass is more than half full. What has to happen is that when Shurna gets taken out of a game (like last night) Drew or Marcotullio or someone else steps up and lets Shurna get back into the game.
That didn't happen in the 2nd half last night as St. Johns forced the 1-3-1 and scored layup after layup to shoot 60% from the floor. It was a clinic on how to beat NU's 1-3-1, and that bothers me more than anything else that happened last night.
Go Cats!

Given the stage, and the fact that it was a tournament final, this game was one of the biggest contests we've had in years. I really wanted to believe things would be different. I wanted to expect victory. I won't believe we make the NCAA tournament until I see the word "Northwestern" on the board during the NCAA tournament selection show on March 13th.
