Jeff:
Unlike the Player Queen, I doth protest exactly the right amount, I think,
or maybe not enough! :)
"New kid on the block" was intended to refer to Nebraska's new home in the
Big Ten.
The "lesser claim" comment was referring to my gripe that while "NU" is a
logical abbreviation for "Northwestern University," "NU" as an abbreviation
for "University of Nebraska" is not. Until the Huskers change their
school's name to "Nebraska University," Northwestern should not have to
adopt an unwanted alternative abbreviation as an accommodation to that
"lesser claim." I have no problem with both Minnesota and Michigan laying
claim to "U of M" (of course, I am partial to the Gophers in that respect,
but at least Michigan _is_ a "U of M", I'm willing to admit for purposes of
this argument) or Iowa and Illinois both as "U of I" . . . but if Iowa or
Illinois decided they wanted to start calling themselves "IU," they're free
to do so but the conference should decline to recognize it out of deference
and respect to the _real_ IU, Indiana University, regardless of the history,
strength, or weakness of the respective football programs. It's more than
just football, in my opinion.
