Touche!:)
Though I would say that 16 is probably too wide a net to cast - certainly a 4 or even an 8-team playoff wouldn't result in an undeserving champ.
I'll also add that when this happened in the NCAA, it was part of the magic of March Madness (Villanova '85, NC State '83, etc.) - and no one complained when the wild card Broncos and Steelers won Super Bowls.
Every championship rewards those playing the best at the end (which is why I think Wisconsin fans would really want a playoff this year) - but at least it's settled on the field and they have a shot.
Except for college football - where your preseason rank, perceived conference greatness and ability to schedule Arkansas State in November instead of a tough game mean more than what happens on the field.
It just baffles me how all of the competitive sports world settles it on the field with competition ... except college football, who has the monopoly on how to determine a real champ, apparently.
If we went by regular season alone, the Pats would be 16-0 world champs a few years back, UNLV would have been unbeaten college hoops champs in 1991, Brazil would be World Cup champs, the Red Wings would have a lot more banners in The Joe and the Oakland A's would have a few more world series titles from the late 1980s. Not only does college football use that warped logic, they don't even play everyone in their regular season like they do in those other sports. UGH!
GO CATS!!!
