It wasn't.

If Michigan State and Ohio State had played, one of them would have 
another loss and would not even be in the BCS discussion. They shouldn't 
be rewarded for ducking each other. The Big Ten wasn't *that* great this 
year.

As much as anyone can be said to "deserve" a BCS at-large spot, I doubt 
there has ever been a situation where three teams from one conference 
really "deserved" to be in a BCS bowl. As many problems as the BCS has, 
this rule isn't one of them.
