[NU Sports] For those who need a break from dumb Big Ten ideas ...

You are correct.

The only thing a playoff settles is who is playing the best at the end of the season. Folks predict that it will give the little guy a chance, but in fact it will give one or two loss teams from the big conferences a better chance to win a national championship by winning their conference championship and getting hot during the playoffs. The NCAA bball playoffs are such a grind, that the cream generally does rise to the top. I'm not sure the football playoffs will produce the same results.

As we've seen with NU, injuries can dramatically change the competitive nature of teams. What happens, for example, if Cam Newton blows a knee in practice? Does that mean that Auburn loses the right it earned by its body of work to play in the NC game?

I suspect that we will see a national championship playoff eventually, but for now I'm only concerned about NU playing in the only playoff available to us and winning that one.

You know, that WAS fun...because it illustrated all the reasons why I hate the
idea of a playoff.

The first time I ran the simulation, Virginia Tech--a team that lost
to I-AA James Madison--made it all the way to the championship game. blech.

The second time, Stanford (a team that couldn't win it's own conference title)
won the National Championship. double blech.

The third time (and I swear, I'm not making this up) the #2 through #6
seeds--Oregon, TCU, Stanford, Wisconsin, & Ohio State--all lost in the first
round, and the #15 seed Nevada made it to the championship game. At that point,
I about tossed my breakfast all over my laptop and felt it was time to quit.

So, you know...playoffs aren't a guarantee of spectacular drama. Sometimes,
they just suck.
