The rule got changed right after BC had half the team transfer.
NU's grad rate for basketball was going to be under 50% because all those guys "dropped
out." But as I remember they all went to Div II or III schools, played, started, and
graduated on time and coincidently the rule got changed right about that time BC lost all
those kids. It didn't hurt our academic standing because they all got degrees somewhere
else, and on time.
NU's loss of Arby F, is some other school's major gain. I hope he picks a college that
excels in his academic field so he can continue his studies AND be a force on their
gridiron.
I wouldn't really care if Coble took a spot with a Div III or II school in the Winter
quarter. As long as they're not in the Big 10

Northwestern QB Transfers since 2000 (that I can recall):
Tony Stauss - announced after the 2002 season that he was transferring to
North Dakota State. He was the opening day starter as a sophomore in 2002
but didn't look good and was ultimately passed up by Brett Basanez. Note
that Stauss had to fill in for Baz mid-year after he fractured his leg at
Minnesota, in the infamous 49-0 loss at Penn State (which I attended and
believe is the low point in the post-2000 era).
Derrell Jenkins - played a little at QB in 2002 and also returned kicks and
switched positions (to RB and then to defensive back) before transferring, I
believe (he has stats listed from 2002-04 so I'm not sure if he actually
transferred or just left). He ended up going 0/5 passing with 2 INTs in his
career (he went 0/4 with both INTs at Iowa that year in another ugly game).
Alex Webb - played during 1 game in 2002 as a true freshman in which he
suffered a lacerated liver and was given a redshirt year. He played
sparingly in 2003 but then transferred, not sure to where though.
Regarding transfers as they relate to NCAA graduation statistics:
- Graduation Success Rate (GSR) as calculated by the NCAA excludes students
who leave the school before they graduate as long as they remain
academically eligible at that time.
- Federal graduation rate counts the students who graduate out of those who
enrolled there initially. Therefore, transfers out of the school count
against the school while incoming transfers aren't even counted.
- Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a current snapshot and counts both
eligibility and retention, so it counts against a school if a student
transfers, I believe, although not that much as long as they remain
eligible.
