Yeah, but last year we had Jeremy Nash. This year---not so much.
Can Cobb fill that role? Probably, but not as well, at least not yet. And I
don't think Ryan or Marcotullio can occupy nearly as much space as Nash did.
Throw in the fact that Nash turned into a solid offensive threat last year as
well, and those are big shoes to fill.
We also had Kyle Rowley, who was (at times) able to use his size and strength
against the bigger centers. Luka works hard, but he's overmatched at times down
in the blocks. That was particularly evident against the Jays, especially in the
first half, and could be a big problem down the road (nothing new there, of
course). I wish Kyle had stuck around to at least give Carmody the option of
going bigger at times.
That said, it does look like everyone that's back got better. Thompson is
playing well, and Shurna and Crawford might just have monster years for us. If
Luka can learn to be more consistent, and if Cobb is quickly able to adapt to
the college game, things look good.
Frankly, I think we might have made the tourney last year if Marcotullio had
simply maintained the hot hand he showed in non-con play. He looked great last
night, and if he can keep that touch (and play decent D) throughout the year, we
should be in good shape to outscore a lot of teams.
