[NU Sports] VANDERBILT

John,

I lived in Nashville from 2002 - 2009. Your assessment of hotels on West End
Ave. is spot on. Opryland still hasn't re-opened since the flood but I would
never recommend it anyway because it's so far away from the rest of the city.
The guide was exaggerating about country stars living nearby, but you may well
see some in Starbucks.

Here are some other things to consider while in Nashville.
- The Pancake Pantry on 21st ave. (in a neighborhood called Hillsboro Village)
is legendary. You'll be in the tourist crowd standing in line but the pancakes
are awesome.

- The honky-tonk bars are on lower Broadway (use 412 Broadway as an address on
Google maps). Legends Corner and Tootsie's are the most well known but really
the musical talent is the same everywhere. I personally like The Stage and
Second Fiddle. Some of the new ones across the street are OK too, but the
Trailer Park is a dump.

- Rotiers is a legendary greasy spoon about 75 yards from the Vanderbilt
Marriott. The burgers are tasting, but don't bring health nuts and vegetarians.

- A can ride from the Vanderbilt stadium to Lower Broadway shouldn't be more
than $8-$10. If the weather is good you can walk it in about 35 minutes.

- If anyone wants an expensive dinner there's a place called Margot's in my old
neighborhood (East Nashville) that is awesome. Also over in East Nashville
there's a local joint called the Family Wash that makes an awesome Shepherd's
pie and has good local music.

If you have any more specific questions, please let me know.

Go Cats!
Jim

I've never been to Vanderbilt, but we're going to the game, so I'll quickly
share my research.

There are two hotels immediately adjacent to the stadium: a Holiday Inn and a
Marriott. There are also a bunch of other hotels within a few blocks of the
stadium in Nashville's "West End" including a Loews (which appears to be the
nicest hotel in the neighborhood), two Hampton Inns, a Courtyard, and a little
further up West End Ave., an Embassy Suites and a Hilton Garden Inn. The "West
End" appears to be a fairly hip part of town, and given that you can walk to the
game, that's where we're staying. According to one guidebook, "[T]he
moneymakers and musicians of the Nashville scene gather in the West End,
referred to by locals as the intellectual side of town. . . . [T]his upscale
neighborhood is home to many small shops, lots of excellent (and often
expensive) restaurants, and several hotels." The guide goes on to say that a
bunch of country music stars live in mansions nearby. The neighborhood is also
adjacent to Nashville's Centennial Park, which features a full-size replica of
the Parthenon.

If anyone else has any more info to share, we'd appreciate it, as well.

By the way, I learned today that NU sold its entire allotment of tickets for the
Vanderbilt game, so there should be a few Cats fans in attendance. I'll be
buying our tickets from StubHub or directly from Vanderbilt.
