[NU Sports] Columnist calls for Vandy to be kicked out of SEC

I seem to remember, when I was at NU in the early 70's, that it was the faculty who was
pushing to withdraw from the Big 10, not the Big 10 pushing to remove NU.

I honestly think it was the fear of NU's withdrawal from the Big 10, that led to the
acceptance of State Penn into the conference.

I have never seen this anywhere - is there now (or was there previously) a
mechanism for removing a Big Ten conference member, especially a founding
member ? I had always presumed (without proof, apparently), that we could
not get kicked out of the Western Conference of Faculty Representatives, but
that we would have to withdraw voluntarily (a la the U of C)

Does anybody happen to know ?

I suppose in a pinch that 10 or 11 members could withdraw, and form their
own association, to which we were not invited. Additionally, I'll assume
(again, I don't know) that the SEC was formed differently, and they may have
a mechanism for removing a member that they no longer like

Any thoughts ?

Ugh - that does bring up some bad memories of the "kick NU out of the Big
Ten" movement in the 80s.

However, they can flip the writer's smug sentence on him and say that the
only reason the SEC has "held on" to Vanderbilt is for a shred of academic
credibility. Face it, without the Commodores, they might as well strip the
word "University" from the rest of the schools in the league.

This summer's Big Ten search and the introduction to the non academic
world that there was an AAU outside of the basketball club only highlighted the
gap between the SEC and other schools in terms of the focus on being a
real university and not just a Nike factory.

Probably nothing to worry about for Vandy - but this isn't the Big Ten,
it's the SEC, and I wouldn't dismiss the push as easily. It may be all talk,
but at least the Big Ten uses the term "student athlete" without mumbling
the first word.

Oh well, columns like that forget how things can always change. One
preview magazine this year had a list of six BCS schools not carrying their
weight in their respective conferences - Indiana was listed for the Big Ten, not
 Northwestern!
