[NU Sports] 16-team conferences

Besides the points that have already been posted, the Big 12 formed when
the Southwest Conference collapsed. The four Texas teams that joined
the Big 8 to form the Big 12 had a lot of leverage. The conference
headquarters, for example, moved to Dallas. So it's not surprising that
a name change was also part of the deal.

Fortunately, in this situation, the BT has all the leverage and those
teams who are joining the conference are going to do so pretty much on
BT terms.

But the Big Eight did when it went to twelve teams.
