Actually, his son, Carl, also included in his email to me the following  
sentence (in response to my statements regarding John's status on the list),  
which speaks volumes about John's penchant for taking a stand on issues,  
regardless of whether his position might be a popular one:
 
"Yes, if you met my dad it did not take too long to figure out where he  
stood on an issue."
