What's wrong with rivalry?
I suggest that it is part of the competitive nature of sport to try to
demonize those who dominate.
It is also a fairly natural reaction of the dominant to marginalize
those who to aspire to change the pecking order.

Why ask why?
Seriously, though, for me it started in 1995. Everywhere I went, if I
happened to be wearing a Northwestern T-shirt, I couldn't go twenty feet
without being accosted by an Ohio State fan telling me how they "would
have" pulverized us. (This was in CHICAGO, mind you -- not central
Ohio.) There are a zillion more reasons, but it starts and ends there.
I might as well make my annual assertion that I view every loss by
another Big Ten team as good for us. I don't care if everyone views our
conference as weak; being part of the awful ACC in the 1990s never
seemed to hurt Florida State.
