The 'real' Yankee Stadium disappeared in the last renovation.
I'm not quite old enough to actually remember the Gotham Bowl, which lasted
two years. The 1961 game, between Baylor and Utah State, was at the
Polo Grounds (sigh), the 1962 game, between Nebraska and Miami (FL), was
at Yankee Stadium.
As to the issue of their being too many bowl games, it's close, but I
actually enjoy some of the lesser bowl games over the mid-majors, in part
because for the most part the schools are delighted to be there rather than
grumbling that they should be in a BCS bowl. (I'm still hoping for a
southern school, or better yet, Hawaii, to have to play in the Humanitarian
bowl in Boise Idaho.)
Two of the bowl games are on shakey ground with the NCAA at the moment,
with the local convention and visitors board now being their sponsors.
I think the Seattle Bowl and the Silicon Valley Bowl both died a couple
of years ago, and the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl (not for Division I teams) died
last year after their title sponsor filed for bankruptcy.
The Aloha Bowl was discontinued and replaced with the Hawaii Bowl, I think,
but I think it is run by a separate organization.
And even though they haven't been sponsoring the bowl game in years, I think
Poulan still gets some marketing 'oomph' from the old Weedeater Bowl.
