I think that one of the important 'lessons' that our program has to learn is how to make a bowl every year, whether we are good (last year) or bad (this year). We have to learn to avoid those flameout years, like Illinois is having. Players, coaches and administrators all have lessons to learn and techniques to refine (i.e. scheduling, placement of n-c games, marketing) to get to the point where we are one of those programs that always goes bowling.
Fitz is succeeding in making us a 'Bowl caliber' team every year, that gets us recognition from fans, media and prospective recruits.
Next step is to get better talent, so the good years outnumber the so-so years.
But whether good or so-so, we need to go to get the extra practices, increase the exposure, reward the players, and plant the idea in everybody's mind that Northwestern is a bowl-type program. This will separate us from Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, and maybe a couple of others.

Frankly, I don't think we deserve to go to a bowl game if
we end the season 6-6.
Assuming the mostly likely 6-6 scenario (beating Illinois,
losing to PSU, Iowa, and Wisconsin), we really won't have
beaten anyone good. Just check (for example) the Sagarin
ratings for our opponents--it's not pretty.
Absolutely right, Tom. God knows I love our Cats, but if all we can manage over
he rest of the season is to beat Illinois, we will be one of the
east-qualified bowl teams in history.
