[NU Sports] Kicking (fwd)

All good points.

Blocking kicks is an art form - something you have to practice, and something that shapes the
decisions of the other team on the field.

We always taught to go for a spot a yard in front of where the kicker wound up to kick. On a
place kick you try to go the O-line side of the holder, but you don't want to hit anyone.

My observations on kicking these days is that they are really trying to aim the kicks but get in
trouble when they don't hit the ball properly. Place kickers try to miss certain guys on the
defense who are known for jumping up for a tip. (I've seen several missed FG's in the pros where
the kicker was trying to avoid the pyramid setting up on the other side of the line)

Our kickers traditionally work by themselves in one corner of the field. I don't know if there
is a true kicking coach, but when my middle son played in Greensboro, they had a volunteer
kicking coach who turned their kicking around.

Maybe we need to find someone from daBares or something?

Like at Virginia Tech? I believe they block a lot more punts than most teams.

It'd be interesting to compare that with how many times VT gets flagged
for hitting the kicker and how often they get burned with a big return
because they went for the block.

A more subtle stat might be the number of first-team players who got
injured on special teams plays at VT.
