It is a very disappointing outcome, although one of my partners (who
actually does legal work for the American Olympic Committee and has done IOC
arbitrations) told me--after the results were in (when I questioned him about
the votes)--that Rio was a virtual "lock" all along.

The fact that Pat Ryan was heading Chicago's bid, and that Ryan Field would
have been a venue would have brought an international spotlight on NU. In
fact, our new President, Morty Schapiro, mentioned this in his speech to
Northwestern alums, parents, etc. Wed. night (9/30) in NYC.

President Schapiro met and greeted, and addressed, a large turnout in a
gorgeous venue (the fairly new "Jazz at Lincoln Center" Rose Theatre and
space, high above Columbus Circle). He was incredibly impressive and dynamic.
And he demonstrated, in response to a question, his firm commitment to (a)
supporting NU Athletics and (b) maintaining the highest standards of
integrity, for which NU's Athletic program has a well-deserved reputation,
making clear that he would not lower academic standards in pursuit of "wins".
He is incredibly student-oriented, and looks to be a real "keeper".
