[NU Sports] Outback Bowl

An early bid would potentially be of great benefit to the fans who would be travelling to the game by air.

At this time of the year, when fares are already high, being able to purchase tickets before December might get fans a lower fare.  Airfares to Orlando from Chicago are already in the $400-500 range.  They're likely to go up in the next two weeks.  For a family of 4, that's a pretty significant cost.

I'm not sure if NU still has an "official airline" (it used to be United), but the school has not negotiated any discounts for bowl travel in the past.  They have usually promoted the Alumni Association's Bowl Tour, which is also pretty costly.  Unfortunately, many supporters choose to watch the game at home, rather than incur the cost of attending the game.

It's becoming less and less common for bowls affiliated with BCS conferences
to dole out bids early since so much is dependent on who gets the at-large
bids.  Technically, a bowl can "release" a team from consideration, so if
the Outback formally released NU and the Champs knew they wouldn't take
Wisconsin, then NU could get a bid.  I doubt that will happen, though, since
most of the formal decision-making meetings with the bowl folks are during
the week/weekend leading up to the announcement on Dec. 6, and the bowls
will likely want to keep their options open in case anything weird happens
above them.
