A true statement, but the team I saw last night has more problems than
losing Kevin Coble. We have no center. None. Not on defense. Not on
offense. Not on the boards. None. And we have no power forward. We again
will be outrebounded by every team taller than the Little People Daycare
Center. We have precious few fine athletes at guard and small forward.
Shurna will have to prove he can be consistent, which he certainly did not
do last night. He will have his good games but is not talented enough to
carry the team. Thompson and Nash will provide spark, but Nash has been
subject to streaks of erratic and out-of-control play. Crawford looked
quick and may offer positive results before season's end, but right now he
is woefully inexperienced. Some other frosh or soph may step up. But who?
That fellow did not play last night. Our only run came after it was all
over but the shouting about the lack of NU basketball talent. Like the
football team - indeed, worse than the football team - they must play a
near-perfect game to win, and they ain't a gonna do that often in the Big
Ten. May I please be wrong, but I don't think I will be. I now enter my
45th year of bad-to-mediocre NU basketball.
