[NU Sports] Basketball

I watched the game (god bless the Big 10 network) and while all of coach Roy's observations, sparked by Carmody's comments, are of course dead on -- I'm here to say that performance by the Northwestern basketball team was ugly.

And if it don't get any prettier, it's gonna be a long, long winter in Evanston.

Unfortunately, I only got to hear the 2nd half of the game over airwaves...

It was pretty sloppy sounding, with all the turnovers - BC's comment was that you couldn't turn
it over 16 times and win, and he was right.

A quick look at the box and there is Juice with 16 Pts in 40 minutes, followed Shurna with 14 in
38 minutes - about what you'd expect from a Carmody offense.

Missing was the 3rd big scorer that usually gives NU the win - the closest came off the bench,
Marcotullio, who found his shot in the 2nd half, but scored 8 in 15 mins. I also heard Rowley's
name called more than once in the 2nd half, and he had 6 in 11 mins.

Missing was the number of steals we usually get, and any kind of offense from 17:46 - 12:56 as
we appeared to demonstrate how many ways you can turn over a baskeball.

>From Dave's comments, I gathered they are very high on Marcotullio, even though he didn't start.
He showed that he could put the ball thru the hoop once he found his range, and might wind up as
the 3rd scorer that BC needs to make his offense go.

Like I said, I only heard the game on the radio.

It was pretty ugly.

I knew going in that we would have trouble scoring, but what I really was disappointed in was
the sloppines(turnovers) and the defense.

We have to play mistake-free while contesting all shots.

Juice went through a period where it felt like he turned it over posession after possession.

I don't think Butler is top 10, but neither are we even tournament bubble quality.

Another season of basketball has begun, and the results look exactly like years past. We lost -
badly. We still can't rebound or break down a good defense. We got Thompson and Nash and
little else. Rowley looks like a string bean compared to last season and is lighter on his
feet, but he still can't play the game of basketball. Mircovic is better but will strike no
fear into opposing defenses. Shurna will have good games at times but is erratic and stoppable
even if he gets hot. Crawford is raw but may turn out well in time, but he's a long way from
that point now. Only a miracle will make this our first NCAA season.
