[NU Sports] Jim O'Donnell Article in the Sun-Times

As I recall, from the early GB years, as far as infrastructure it is the
training and practice facilities that are generally thought to have the
most impact on recruiting. That's because football kids spend a lot of
time using those services and appreciate the latest stuff. Those who
are thinking about playing on Sundays are going to decide whether or not
the training program will be able to get them to the size and speed they
need to have a chance.

The fact that our players have had significantly more success in the NFL
over the past five years than ever before is testimony both to our
training program and the quality of kids that we are recruiting.

I agree that Fitz is just taking advantage of the opportunities he has
to stay on message regarding potential recruits. Harbaugh did the same
thing to Michigan a couple of years ago when he shared his classroom
experience. These guys all know who they are competing with for
recruits and what their best value props are.

It seems like the Chicago media ecology has a niche for one anti-NU guy.
Now that Maridiot is gone, perhaps Jim O'Donnell is auditioning.

O'Donnell is too hard on Fitz, who is, after all, trying to sell his
football program nationally. What was he supposed to have said about
the Iowa win? We stink but we won in spite of ourselves? On the other
hand, O'Donnell makes valid points. Do not assume, Jonathan, that
because a majority of this listserv has concluded that a new stadium
would not improve attendance that you have uttered God's own truth. If
nothing else, a new stadium would prove that the university is serious
about NU football, something that definitely has not always been the
case.
