[NU Sports] could the BCS form its own division?

My memory is hazy on this, but aren't we speaking of something akin to the College Football Association, formed in the early 80's after Oklahoma and Georgia sued the NCAA for violating the Sherman Anti-trust act ?

As I remember it, the Big Ten and Pac-10 stayed out of the CFA, which I think broke up after Notre Dame signed their own deal.

Since the BCS isn't really associated with the NCAA (I think ?), and since the BCS Championship is not an officially sanctioned NCAA championship (?), couldn't the BCS unilaterally declare that only schools from the BCS conferences could participate in, share money from, and win a BCS championship ?

I would trust that in any situation like this, the Big Ten and Pac-10 would take the high road once again, and participate only if the new entity behaved in a manner befitting the Pac-10 and Big Ten - i.e. no conference school could be kicked out for being small, etc.

And I believe that we would always be protected, since we were a founding member of the Big Ten. And I say bring it on. Have the BCS declare that only BCS schools would play for the championship. They could play mid-majors to get non-conf victories, but Boise State, Utah, etc. could never play for a championship.

Perhaps then, the NCAA could develop a playoff for the mid-majors, while leaving the bowls to the big boys.

Amazing what herniated disks in your back can do; I've been posting more in
he past few days than I have all season! No honey-dos at least until the
edication kicks in!
Steven: Good points about the recession being a factor as impacting
ttendance. My company has seen reduction in salary (me included) as well as
nder 40 hours per week for our hourlies, so guess what happened to going to
yracuse(6 hours north of where I live.)?...POOF up in smoke.
You cited Arizona St's lack of drawing people, and another poster pointed
ut that TCU can't fill their stadium, although I read an article at
BSSportsline that they've sold out their 1st game in 3 years. (vs. Utah this
eekend.)
And as laborious as the subject is, it's still worth talking about, and
houldn't be dismissed. It's the reason why we get passed over; twice by the
utback Bowl to the Alamo, where we had Top 8 talent in Missouri and Nebraska
aiting for us.
Its been pointed out that season ticket holders have been shuffled around,
ot to mention us yahoos who get off the "L", although my last game in Evanston
as the 2005 opener vs. Ohio. The best ideas I've seen, and chimed in, are
ater starts and cheap seats Goal line-20 yard line and end zone seats, or a
regular-priced ticket that includes a hot dog, Coke and a program.
Having some one other than East Mich., Towson and Miami(OH>) would help. It
asn't too long ago we had Kansas and Arizona St.
Illinois: Any one know anything about this red-shirt QB? I know Juice
enerated the first 2 touchdowns, and the 2nd stringer moved them pretty well,
ut Minnesota nearly came back which tells me their defense figured something
ut, as they were behind 7-28, and lost 32-35.
Basketball: Bring it on! I watched NC and Syracuse tonight for a bit.
ooking forward to Friday's game vs. Northern.
              GO CATS!! Eric

> On the heels of one of the best seasons in school history,
we can't get 20,000 NU fans in the seats for an average Big
Ten game. We probably didn't draw 25,000 NU fans to a night
e had more than 25K vs. PSU.
ut seriously, I am just sick of the whole attendance talk -- we've put a darn
od product on the field for 15 years with more bang for the buck than anywhere
se with upsets and thrilling finishes, and if Chicago can't get on board with
at, tough. Forget 'em!
lus, I really think it's unfair to look at attendance numbers this year with
e economic downturn -- everyone's hurting this year. Sunday's Arizona Republic
d a big article on how the Suns -- Arizona's most favorite of teams -- had
eir sellout streak broken despite a great start to the year ... and ASU, never
le to fill their huge stadium despite having the largest student body in
erica and a huge local alumni base, is really struggling ... and how even the
esta Bowl is in big trouble (and the tickets this year are renewable for next
ar's title game).
he NFL is even struggling to fill seats (and not just in Jacksonville) -- so
s, we have attendance woes, but this year is something that goes far beyond
e usual NU problems.
s for forming their own division, John did a pretty good job explaining why
is can't happen -- the big boys need the MACs and WACs to feast on for home
mes, money, stats and wins. Heck, what would Florida, Texas or Penn State do
they could only play BCS league teams?:)
ut I still think this is gonna be a veeeeery interesting BCS finish if TCU and
ise win out. Of course, Utah could save the embarrassment by topping TCU this
ek, so we'll see what happens.
O CATS!!!
