Sure, they could secede (in football only), but the question is what would
happen in the other sports where they will still be competing in the NCAA?
I would imagine that the other Division I members wouldn't like that too
much and could basically kick them out in the remainder of the sports. I
doubt that a 66 team division could survive while trying to support the
number of sports that they currently do - since schools don't all support
the same sports and the NCAA provides the necessary bureaucracy to make it
all run.
Sure, it's all about money, so they could likely make it work, although I
imagine that it would be at the detriment to other sports. Another reason
why I don't think it would happen since that would directly fly in the face
of their "student athlete" mantra and non-profit status - at that point the
legislators could definitely get involved since it would essentially be a
semi-pro football league. At least now the schools can use the NCAA as a
shield.
