[NU Sports] Asking the impossible

Ahhh, spoken like one who wants to find someone other than the perp to
blame....

The guys who rented the strippers were over 21 and living in a private
residence. They invited a bunch of the buddies over for a party - the
buddies just happened to be members of the Lacrosse team, a team they played
on also.

One of the strippers turned out to be a well known (to the Durham police)
head case. She picked the height of a hotly contested primary to file a
complaint of rape, one of the charges where you are automatically guilty
until proved innocent in today's society, against the guys in the house. She
also played the "race" card since she was of African heritage, and the 20
athletes in the house were of Anglo-European descent.

The DA proceeded as if everyone in the house, all 20 or so, had been ready
and able to successfully commit rape in less than 10 minutes, an event that
would have set a new world record had it been videotaped for mass
distribution as a porno film. They were reported to have all crowded into a
small powder room to commit this act.

But because it was a primary time, and the DA needed something to set
himself apart, he ignored the DNA evidence clearing everyone in the house of
any sexual intercourse, much less rape and proceeded to destroy the
reputations of the players.

Two of these kids had prior issues with law enforcement and were on
probation - they wound up serving sentences unrelated to the event because
they had been arrested - of the crime that never happened.

I'll ignore the idiotic rantings of the Marxist profs who claimed racism
that didn't exist in a crime that never happened, etc. etc.

But the final result was the DA was removed from office, removed from the
bar and was faced with jail time for ignoring evidence, and trying to cover
up other evidence - which made me wonder why anyone would want to live in
Durham, or go to Duke.

I'm sure that my middle son was involved in parties serving alcohol run by
fellow members of the football team where he attended school - a good North
Carolina Methodist (read we don't Drink) school. I never blamed the coaches
of the team for his hangovers. I'm pretty sure he helped break up a few
fights at these parties - they used to invite him to these affairs (as he
told us) because he was considered a good/bad cop when things got tense
between players.

As you guys may remember, I never blamed Randy Walker for player's problems
- if anything Randy went out of his way to rehab guys who got crosswise with
the law. I don't blame any coach for things kids over 21 do, because it
isn't my fault if my 21 year old, out of college, sons do something wrong.

It is called Personal Responsibility.

Div I athletes never had to sign an oath to behave. They took their lumps
from the law when they broke it, and came out better citizens. Some screwed
up so badly, they never recovered, but that was their fault, not the fault
of their position or head coach.

As long as we're always looking for scapegoats, we will fail.

You can't litigate morality and you can't legislate it either. When you try
you just get a bunch of petty rules that people go out of their way to
ignore. What do we have now, 80% use of seatbelts?

A Few Basic Truths:
  You cannot Legislate Morality
  You cannot Litigate Peace
You cannot Tax yourself to Prosperity
  Wealth transfer makes everyone poorer
It's all been tried, and failed before.

So it becomes natural for the institution and law enforcement to engage
the coaches because in many other situations that don't make it into the
paper, the coaching staff has volunteered to be engaged.
