[NU Sports] Basketball Coaches salaries

Indiana isn't currently a bball power. UCLA has never regained the glory of the Wooden years. We'll have to wait to see what happens when coach K. retires, but even his program has struggled the past couple of years to maintain the dominance of the past. MSU was the exception rather than the rule. They did successfully make the transition from Heathcote to Izzo and they have run a clean program at a school where infractions in other programs were common.

Those guys were lightning in a bottle, just like Gary Barnett was for us. They all were the right guys at the right place and in the right time. That's why, with the noteable exception of Izzo, they couldn't be replaced.

It's that pressure to be the next "great" coach, that drives these guys to cheat.

So if the question is could NU find a "lightning in a bottle" guy for our Bball program, the answer has to be yes - because anything is possible. Is it likely, no it isn't because so many others have also tried that path and failed.

IMHO, we have the guy that we need and he has the staff that he needs to continue to build our program on the "steady eddy" path. I will repeat that I don't think that NU will ever be a basketball power in the same way that MSU is, but I do believe that we will be in the dance in the next year or two, we'll have a winning record in conference play, and we'll become competitive on a regular basis in the BT.

Given where we have been, that's a great accomplishment in itself.

Jeff

Re: [NU Sports] Basketball Coaches salaries<There are only three BT basketball programs that have never received an NCAA sanction - Michigan State, Penn State, and Northwestern.

Did Indiana receive one while Bobby Knight was there winning championship after championship? Did UCLA get one while Wooden was there? Or Duke under Kryzewski? As you said, perenniel Big Ten powerhouse MSU has never received a sanction. If "I don't think tha NU will ever become a basketball power" isn't cynical, then you surely must agree it is defeatist.
