Dennis,
It isn't cynicism at all. Just a good memory for sports trivia.
Most every school in the BT has been on probation for basketball recruiting violations in the past ten years.
There are only three teams who haven't ever had a basketball recruiting violaton - Michigan State, Penn State, and Northwestern.
Michigan State has a long history of basketball success and only eight teams have more final four appearances. So they don't need to cheat to get players.
Penn State's basketball record isn't as sad as Northwestern's but their last trip to the tournament was 2001 and you have to reach back to 1954 for a team that made it to the final four.
You are right that you have to get players to win. Over the past ten years, most of the schools in the BT cheated in order to get them.
Jeff

What a cynical attitude! We don't win because we don't get the players.
