For the first time that I can remember, NU got a four star football recruit. That didn' happen by accidennt. High school players now see NU has a quality program. Success breeds success.

Bringing in a Tubby Smith kind of a coach would more than likely attract better BB players assuming that bringing in someone of Smith's stature isn't in the twilight of his career, e.g. Bill Foster. Lose Fitzgerald and there goes football. I would be willing to pay a professor a lot of money assuming that he or she won a Nobel prize for something other than being PC otherwise, getting regular sell outs of BB games and moving up in the NCAA does more for NU than any professor is likely to do.

Salary-shock by the NU trustees notwithstanding, is the expectation (of this group) that bringing in a Tubby Smith-like coach will improve the quality of the athlete that NU will be able to bring in for basketball? Or is the expectation that the TS-like coach would do a better job with the athletes that NU is able to attract?

Even for the better success that the football team has achieved since 1995, the recruiting classes remain mostly comprised of "good" athletes who in some cases mature and eventually excel, granted of course that for hoops, 2-3 high caliber athletes could make dramatic change vs. what you need for football.

It's going to be interesting to see what AD Phillips and the incoming and
outgoing Presidents decide concerning Carmody . I think he definitely comes
back next year, but what if he wants an extension on his contract if he is
nearing the end of his term (I have no idea how many years he has left)? That
could be tricky, although he probably (but not definitely) could obtain a modest
extension. If we don't show well in the NIT, assuming we get an invite,
that would not help his cause at all, as we would have finished on the down
swing, after a whiff of a hope of being considered for the "bubble".
