[NU Sports] Basketball Coaches salaries

Back in the Old Days of NU, during the 1960's, there was quite a bit of talk
about dumping Div I sports among the faculty, and I think some of those who
were around then can attest to the anti-athletic feelings around the campus.
The term "university of Chicago" was bandied about quite a bit, so I was
told.
Part of it was that NU Athletes were beneficiaries of separate funding, part
was the general anti-establishment feelings on campus, part was that
Athletics could raise funds faster than the University Endowment that
covered faculty salaries.
NU was not alone, even one of the Oklahoma presidents wanted to make a gift
to the main University one of the conditions for getting on the season
ticket waiting list because while they could afford to build additions to
the stadium, they couldn't afford to wash the windows on campus.
What later administrators have learned is that sports helps raise money
rather than bleed money from the academics. Even Div III colleges find that
having a football team helps open alumni wallets and purses.
I think you'd probably get some growly letters in the Daily if you spent
Tubby Smith amounts of money, but then if we were able to sell out W-R every
game, we would probably not complain, and neither would the faculty.

John,
Please provide facts to support your assertion that the faculty at NU;
1. Have any influence over the Athletic Department budget
2. Object in any organized way to the salaries of past, current, or
future coaches
I'd also like to see facts to support your implication that NU's past
athletic struggles were the result of the faculty's involvement in the
Athletic Department budget.
Jeff

Today's Wall Street Journal has a good article on basketball coaches
salaries. Anyone have any idea where Carmody fits in? It gives you an
idea what it would cost to replace Carmody. The faculty at NU would
choke at what NU would have to pay to get a Tubby Smith quality coach
which in my opinion is what is needed to move the program to a more
successful level.
