[NU Sports] Purdue win

Chuck,

I think that it is appropriate to question BC's ability to recruit.
IMHO the long road to where we are now is the result of NU's historic
inability to attract talented players and BC shares some of the blame.

What I was referencing were the vocal concerns that BC couldn't coach
because:

- we lost games when our kids couldn't make free throws

- we lost games when we couldn't rebound

- we lost games when our kids folded under pressure

-we lost games when we did a bad job managing the clock

Since this team has demonstrated their ability to improve enough in all
those to be in the hunt at the end of the season, the only plausible
explanation is that BC is actually a pretty good coach.

As far as recruiting is concerned, I think that Hardy can go a long way
toward strengthening NU's ability.

I also agree that if we can't sufficiently augment BC with staff who are
good recruiters, we may need to look elsewhere.

Jeff

Questions about Carmody have centered more on the fact that it has taken
him this many years to reach 'likely NIT/longshot NCAA' status. (BTW -
I can remember far too many BC teams that were labeled 'likely NIT'
teams, only to see the New Yorkers ignore them. That can't possibly
happen this year, can it ? Are we figuring on getting any games at
Welsh Ryan ?)

Not many basketball schools would have had this much patience (rightly
or wrongly).

If Fitz went that many years without a bowl game, there'd be a lot of
grumbling...

Thought it worth repeating for those earlier this season who questioned
Carmody's ability as a coach.

The game was won last night;

1. when Carmody took out the starters, put in Nash, Williams, and
Mirkovic
2. when Carmody switched from zone to man
3. when NU outrebounded Purdue
4. when NU outscored Purdue in the second half by ten
5. when NU made it's last four FT

The best coaches plan to have their teams playing their best basketball
at the end of the season. NU has just won three in a row. Last night
was a BIG win on the road against a team that destroyed us in the last
five minutes in our own house.

I think that most on this list would agree that, as a team, NU is
playing is best ball now. The team has improved in virtually every
category that earlier in the season cost us games. The players
certainly deserve a lot of the credit, but Carmody and his staff should
get credit too.
