Dave Eanet reported on WGN's sports talk after the game about some
speculation that the Cats could finish the Big 10 as high as #5, and not
have to play Thursday, IF they beat dOSU Sunday. I guess there are a bunch
of tie breakers and losses by different teams that would have to line up to
make all that happen but....
The winner of the game involving #5 has to play MSU next which is tough for
every team in the league.
But if NU lost to dOSU, they match up better through the BT tournament to
win enough games to get over .500 in the conference and then earn a NCAA
berth, possibly. Even if its the play in game, its a berth in the
tournament and NU would have to be favored to win a spot in the the first
round 64.
Dave didn't have all the tie breakers handy, and besides it makes for boring
radio, but the GN guys were pretty pumped about the Cats playing beyond next
weekend.

If we hang on against the Illini, we'd be 18-10 and 9-8 in the Conference,
with 4?wins over ranked teams.??Think we'd be mentioned as "on the bubble"??
I do.? Oh, the pain.....We're so close, yet so far.? However, I could be
very happy with an NIT bid, a run through the preliminaries and a trip to
MSG, which would be a "home game" for Yours Truly.

If "yes we can" refers to the phrase Dave Cash applied to the '74 Phillies,
then yes, we can. The team is definitely on the upswing after a frustrating
start and, best of all, is doing it with only one significant senior. Over
the last half dozen or so games, this is the most consistent NU team I can
remember. The Minnesota blow-out was an exception for a flu-ridden team. If
only Rowley were adding anything at all to the team, we would have four more
wins and be a strong contender for the NCAA. I hope I won't have to rent the
CBS package to watch the Big Ten tournament. ?
