Interesting article that shows how Big Ten institutions are currently taking
in more money from TV/Bowl Games that ND, even with their exclusive NBC
contract. The Big Ten Network's success has obviously helped, and ND's
recent failings on the field haven't exactly helped their cause (why again
did NBC sign that extension during ND's worst season ever?). There are a
lot of IFs there - obviously ND's current contract lasts until 2015, and
Delaney and the Big Ten have stated over and over that expansion is on the
back burner, if even on a burner at all, and that a championship game isn't
even on the table even if expansion were to happen. But one can see that
the tide is turning and eventually ND may find itself in a position where it
needs that conference revenue to keep up with the big boys of college
football (they could likely stay solvent as an independent, but it's
doubtful they could stay in the collegiate "elite" - assuming they are even
still there now).
