Politics, even in the midst of a world war, a bone thrown to Stalin. Imagine how different the world would have been for the next fifty years if we would have taken Eastern Europe.

What stopped Patton from going on to Berlin was Eisenhower's order to stop at the Elbe river. This angered Patton to the point that when he knew that he was dying, he ordered that Eisenhower not be allowed to attend his funeral.

Patton's end run, and that prayer for better weather, sure helped.

The Army Air Corps ability to fly after Christmas (the prayer worked) didn't
hurt the guys on the ground either.

AND when the German's ran out of gas....

It was all over. - but it probably stopped Patton from getting to Berlin
  first.

"Nuts!" was the exact word. General Anthony McAuliffe said them at Bastogne

in response to a German demand for surrender. The Germans were somewhat
confused, and then the Americans whooped them.
