Found some info on our 'last' road victory over a Top-10 team (thanks to the
Minneapolis Library)

On December 30, 1952, Minnesota snuck into the Top-10 - at #9

on Wed, Dec 31, The Gophers traveled to Milwaukee to play Marquette

Ozzie Cowles figured he would use the game to give his back-ups some playing
time. He only started 2 starters. The 3-5 Hilltoppers, coached by a young
Tex Winter, pounded the Gophers 70-59. Minnesota shot horribly, 21-91 from
the field, and 17-35 from the line.

3 days later, Sat night, January 3, Minnesota hosted NU at Williams Arena.
There were 10,126 in attendance (not very full) on the 15 degree night. We
had last won at the Barn in 1945. We were 1-4 at that point, having beaten
Butler in Evanston, and had lost to Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State
and Michigan State.

A young Sid Hartman wrote the game story (that could be good or bad,
depending on your perspective).

NU got an early lead, 22-15 after one quarter, built it to 10 at the half,
and then held on to win 71-65

Again, Minnesota shot horribly - 22-96 from the field. We were 22-51. I
shudder to think how they attempted 45 more shots than we did.

3 days later, on the 6th, the new AP poll came out and the Gophers were #19.
Illinois (Harry Combes coaching Johnnie 'Red' Kerr) was 5-1 and #4 (only
loss to the Gophers). The eventual champion Hoosiers were 4-2 and #7.

So we beat a much more 'solid' Top-10 team in MSU than we did in '53 when we
beat the Gophers.

And the Gophers attempted 187 shots in two games ? Against Sparty, we
attemped 54, Izzo attempted 47.

I do remember Winfield being involved but I'm only relying on memory which
isn't very good for most things happening in the late sixties/early
seventies. I didn't cover it for anyone, I just remember watching it, so
I'll defer to anyone else who has better recollections.
