The '53 Cats finished 6-16, 5-13 in conference play in Waldo Fisher's first
season.? They were only 2-8 on the road that season, and came in 8th.

I dug out the old 1953 Syllabus and it described the basketball team as
follows:

"There was one thing about the varsity basketball team this year.
They were just about the best eighth place team in Big 10 history.
But they were plagued by a flock of near misses. There were the two
games against fabulous Indiana university, winners of seventeen conference
games, the Big Ten title, and the national collegiate championship.
The first of the contest was played in Evanston and went to the Hoosiers
by a score of 88-84, in spite of Hal Grant's nine baskets, one of which gave
Northwestern the lead with less then a minute to play.
In the return match at Bloomington, Indiana again had to come from
behind, this time tying the count in the last minute and winning in overtime 90-88.
Another near miss came at Iowa, when even Hawkeye fans admitted that the
referee handed the 89-88 win to the Iowans.
On the winning side, there were Don Blaha's 19 baskets, which helped to
whip Ohio State, and the NU rush in the first half of the game.
There was Frank Ehman's third quarter spree in Ann Arbor, which brought
the Wildcats an 85-84 victory and a sweep of the Michigan series.
The team was well balanced, with five men on the squad scoring 200
points during the season. Larry Kurka's 100 field goals placed him seventh in the
Gig 10 in that department, and he led the club in scoring with a 13.8 average.
John Biever's rebounding and play making earned for him the title as
"most valuable player" on the Northwestern team of the year,"

On a personal note, Don Blaha was a fraternity brother.
