>From a scheduling and fairness standpoint, I completely agree that it's
rather pointless not to play everyone from within the conference. From that
standpoint the "skip 2" doesn't make much sense.
BUT, we all know that college football is all about the money. More
nonconference games allow schools to schedule more home games (more
attendance and TV revenue), play easier teams to get to that higher win
total and reach bowl eligibility, and as a whole conference send more teams
to bowl games. Just look at the Pac-10 (10 teams) which sent 5 teams to
bowls this season (only 1 BCS entrant). Meanwhile, the Big Ten (11 teams)
sent 7 teams to bowls this season (2 BCS entrants). The additional revenue
from the 2nd BCS game and the additional bowl entrants meant a lot when
shared across the conference.
Therefore, the Big Ten would only move to a full conference round robin if
it wants to lose money relative to their current standing.
Overall, if you want to watch a "fair" football league - head on over to the
NFL. College football is not about fairness - NU fans should have picked up
on that by now. Fortunately, NU is in a favorable position being in the Big
Ten and we should appreciate the benefits.
