  We have to skip as many conference mates as is allowed

  that (and our great good fortune in getting 2 teams into the BCS bowls most years) is what gets 7 or 8 teams into bowls

  And that maximizes our share (1/12) of the conference bowl income

  The key is money, after all

Play two non-conference games and every Big 10 team every year.  This skipping 
two conference teams every season makes no sense to me.
