?? I'm ready to climb out of my hole after the Alamo Bowl loss.? My only post since the Alamo Bowl has been a comment or two about watching NU at State Penn on 12/31/08.? I'm hoping with MSU and at Wisky out of the way, we can get untracked.? Not holding my breath.
?? Like many who pointed out, I'm not sure why McCall insisted on running on nearly every first down. Every time it was 2nd down, it was 2nd and 8 or 2nd and 9.? A shame, as I thought the play calling was solid on 2nd and 3rd down.? The kicking hurt (understatement) ;? not sure about that 47 yard attempt as we were kicking Mizzou's ass in the 2nd Q.?
?? We played like champs, but we were the 2nd best team.? Still, 2008 finished as well as any one on our purple-hazed list predicted.? Except for Jim B., who calls for a 12-0 season every year (I want to party with you, Cowboy)?, most of us saw between 6-6 and a few saw 10-2, but not too many.? I predicted 9-3, as a softer schedule with veterans at our skill positions pointed towards a good year.? I saw a win vs. Indiana, and a loss vs. Purdue.?
?? As usual, surprises manifest themselves AS THE SEASON PLays out.? Who knew that Michigan would be lousy and Illinois would be mediocre?? I expected both to be of the 8-4 genre, not under .500.? Or Purdue would be lousy??
?? BCS: I knew our conference was in trouble when Oregon St. lost to Oregon.? We didn't deserve (2) BCS teams this season, but with the 5th BCS game, that's what happened.? Call me nuts, but a 3rd team from the Big 12 should have been invited (I know, against the rules; still not right), or Boise St. , TCU, or Brigham Young.? The Mountain West was as good or better than the PAC 10, Big East, and maybe ...gasp...the Big 10.??Another?reason to loathe OSU: either Ohio St. or Oregon St.
? Anyway,? we would have fared much better if we all would have been dropped down a rung, and Penn St. play Oregon St. in Pascedena.? All internet BS, but consider these match-ups:
? Rose:? Penn St. vs. Oregon St.? PSU hammered 'em in State College; a bit closer in Pascedena; still a PSU win.
? Capital: Ohio St. vs. Georgia.? Toss-up.
? Outback: Michigan St. vs. South Car. : Spartans roll as did Hawks.
? Alamo:?Iowas vs. Mizzou: toss-up.
? Champs: NU vs. FSU: home field advantage for "noles, but we would've been prepared and motivated, unlike Wisky, which was neither.: a toss-up
? Insight:? Wisky vs. Kansas:? Wisconsin: you are a bunch of charlatans:? loss for Big 10.
? Motor City:? Minnesota vs. Cent. Mich.: The last few games of 2008 got between Minny's ears.? Still, a toss-up vs. a MAC team rather than a well-coached, Todd Reesing-lead Kansas team.

? So using the scenario I described, We win (2) games, lose (1) game, and there are (4) toss-ups.? Chances are we would have bested our collective 1-6 bowl record, but thats not saying much, is it?
?? This/that:? has any one seen our 2010 non-conference schedule?? zzzzzz??Our home games:?Illinois St. , and Rice...in November!?
?? 2009:? I plan on attending the game at Syracuse on Sept. 19,? but I'd love to take a road trip to Evanston with my State Penn buddies when NU tears up the Nits.? I have champagne tastes and a beer wallet. We'll see...

????????? GO CATS!!!???????? Eric

> And newspapers need all the help they can get.

I have my doubts that the newspaper industry will survive in anything
resembling its current form for more than the next few years. The
papers are even helping to write their own death warrants by putting
up websites, though failure to do so might be even worse. (Newspaper
websites will never draw in the level of local advertising dollars that
printed papers got. The use of the past tense was intentional.)

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is up for sale, if they don't find a
buyer in 90 days it's probably toast. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is
also looking at going online-only. The days when there are two large
daily papers in Chicago are likely numbered, too. I would not want to
be a senior at Medill (or any other college) right now, the job market
has to be brutal.

The newspapers won't get a 700 billion dollar bailout from Washington,
either, at least not unless they've hired Wesley Mouch as their spokesman.

TV rules the polls, playoff and national championship picture these days,
the AP having declared itself irrelevant.

In many ways the basic purpose hasn't changed, it's still all designed
to attract viewers (aka readers) and sell ads.
