[NU Sports] RE: Ingalls Leaves for Saints

If you watch the line play closely on any team with a good running game,
their lines tend to open very small seams through the D-line and usually
have a really good block on a linebacker that springs the running back past
the backers (about 3 yards)

If the Linebackers read where the seam is planned they can use an additional
linebacker or safety to fill the developing hole, the 8 men in the box
theory of defense. In the spread you have to get enough guys downfield to
discourage the defense from packing the middle and complete the passes to
those receivers.

IMHO, our 5 guys up front did a decent job on pass protection, and usually
got that first seam opened. We usually try to get a running lane through the
B (Tackle-Guard) and C (outside Tackle) gaps, right or left and not always
on the strong (tight end) side.

Our line blocking for runs has always appeared to be a kind of zone block,
where the running lane is supposed to open between the guard and tackle with
the back able to bounce outside depending on how the defense stacks up. I've
never asked if the QB reads anything before handing off but I don't think we
have any play action-QB calls in the playbook that we've used.

Next year, I'd like to see us use Kafka on the option more, and maybe use
Brewer as the pitch guy coming from the slot, the way the spread option
teams do. Our still young line would be able to block this using the zone
techniques, reading the inside folks for the run up the middle.

We can also try running a few of the HB passes next year, and I wouldn't
rule out the Raven's double QB set with Kafka and Persa taking the snap.

The new Line coach is key to all of this. I wouldn't be surprised if one of
the present assistants moved over there, leaving a hole for another
assistant who specializes in that position although we really need another
Jimmy Patton/Tom Bratton clone to take over.

All IMHO of course.

I'm not sure what the season stats were on sacks and yards per carry. Can
someone report on that?

My impressions are we were better than most of the Big Ten on protecting the
quarterback.

And considering that we had a very young front line (how many red shirt
freshman?), I would say the OL did exceptionally well -- which probably why
Ingalls is off to a NFL job.

It would be nice to see these guys create some bigger holes for our running
backs next year.

Go CATS!

NU OL coach Ingalls is leaving for the Saints (he's been with NU for 3
seasons, this is his first NFL coaching job). Fitz is expected to announce
a replacement soon.
